The Cave: A Musical About Truth

The Cave is a modern musical reimagining of Plato’s allegory in a social media–driven world, where a Programmer and their Algorithm test whether “enlightenment” is even real in an age where truth is shaped by bias, perception, and the content we consume.

About This Show

CLICK THE GOOGLE DRIVE LINK ABOVE FOR SONG DEMOS AND DECK! The Cave takes place in a reimagining of Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, where instead of people seeing shadows on the wall, they are scrollers attached to their phones connected on social media. This musical brings this several millennia old story into the 21st century taking the themes further than Plato ever did. The show follows the Programmer (Plato) and their creation, the Algorithm (Socrates) as they conduct an experiment in CoolCave to see how enlightened the scrollers are. In The Allegory of the Cave, Socrates proposes that one of the people in the cave will break free and find the surface, thus becoming enlightened. But what if what they see isn’t the truth? How do we know who is really enlightened? What you see is always influenced by you beliefs and biases. For millennia, we have depicted Plato and Socrates as wise and philosophical, but were they? The Cave dives into many different angles of what truth really is. The social and political significance of The Cave is more apparent than ever. Most of what we consume online influences our thoughts and opinions, so it is up to us to make sure that what is shared and spread is true even if it does not fit our personal narrative.
